Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve posted two very different calls to action on social media channel. One was entitled “I am cranky”, it’s had 110 likes, 32 comments and 12K views, the other, was asking viewers to acknowledge and celebrate a recent success of theirs or someone they admire in their workplace, this has received 10 likes, no comments and a few views.
I wish I weren’t surprised but humans love drama, they like to live in and complain about it, share it and sit in it. We’ve become so bored with our lives that we thrive on TV shows that celebrate yelling at each other, being mean to each other, manipulation and distrust.
And then we come to work and talk about how exciting it was.
This is a slow and steady burn of why there’s so much negativity in our workplaces, and our ability to cope with change is diminishing because we’re focusing on the fake drama of others, so we don’t have to deal with our own.
Science tells us that when we are able to acknowledge the good in our world (gratitude), even when it’s not good, we feel safer more secure and are more productive.
What if when we came to work, we had a positive outlook? If we start our day celebrating each others success, we create a space for gratitude encouragement and support of those around us.
Or alternatively if when we arrive to work, we talk about all the negative things we saw the night before what then do we focus on? The negative. Could this be a reason for our toxic work cultures?
I challenge you as at work today to make time to sit down and think about something you great achieved over the past week or month. Then think about a peer or colleague and let them know that you’re proud of them or congratulate them for their success of a project or activity. With so much negativity in our daily lives, we need to focus on and create positive conversations.
We all responsible for what we bring to work – positive or negative, what ever we bring, we breed.
