Nutrition Plus’s purpose is to build healthy futures with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. This is achieved by assisting schools to provide, fruit, vegetable and bush-tucker gardens that the children are involved in. Through the development and use of the gardens children are able to develop life skills around growing and cooking food, and where possible the gardens are also linked to curriculum with the produce being utilised in school meal or cooking programs. . With the help of their Elders and community the children also experience a deeper connection to their local bush-tucker food, their language and their culture. Nutrition Plus is also provides a daily fruit and vegetable nutritional supplement (Juice Plus+®) to the children each day at school.

The Newcastle Basket Brigade brings together likeminded volunteers who want to make a difference in our community. Throughout the year we raise funds and collect donations of toys and non-perishable food items and in the weeks leading up to the Festive Christmas Season we bring all of this together and create food baskets, with gifts for the children and parents, to distribute anonymously to families in need in our communities.
Our baskets contain the items to create a wonderful Christmas lunch and some treats as well. We also include pantry staples and the basket sizes are determined by the family size. Age appropriate gifts are wrapped and included in the delivery. The baskets are anonymous but they do include a simple note that says “This is from someone who cares. We hope that you can take care of yourself so that one day you may be able to do the same for someone else”
While the basket recipients receive a basket full of food and gifts and the message of caring from strangers, the volunteers also greatly benefit from their participation in the Newcastle Basket Brigade. Many return year after year and bring their family and friends to have an experience of selfless giving at a time when many of us take for granted all the wonderful things we have in our lives.
We welcome everyone to get involved, from the very young to the very old, no matter who you are or what your circumstances are you are welcome at the Basket Brigade.
Our goal for 2016 is to deliver 1000 or more baskets.
